So…occasionally, I have to remind myself that I’m an artist in addition to a small business owner. That’s about the time where I feel like if I don’t do something creative for myself (as in…NOT PAID), I might burn out and BURST into a million pieces. In fact, this need and craving to be creative and then..to unleash it…came about in 2008 when I went to a seminar given by John Michael Cooper, of Alt F (in Las Vegas). Hearing him tell his talk inspired me to reach out to the artist withing…unleash the crazy thought process. I hate to sound like a copy cat, but he told us that he carries around a mini note book and whenever he has a crazy concept photo idea, he sketches it out in that. …so I figured that was genius…so what did I do…I bought myself a fancy little orange leather mini notebook (yes, orange like my branding color 🙂 )
…so ever since, I’ve been scribbling ideas and sketches in there religiously, whenever I have a good (or bad) idea. One of which, was the “Bun in the Oven” concept idea.
…I was so excited about the photo idea…that I almost didn’t pay attention to the “how” I would accomplish it. Finding the perfect subjects would be next to impossible…but then…in steps fate….otherwise called Stacey and Josh (for this example).
Stacey and Josh hired me as their first choice wedding photographer a few years ago….and we were a perfect match. One thing I remember crystal clearly from their wedding day was a moment in the limo ride. I remember asking about if they were planning on having children soon….to which they laughed. They then explained they were on a mission not to reproduce. ….HA! I can say that and make fun of them for it, because those were my exact thoughts before I got pregnant (unexpectedly, as a teenager). So…fast forward to about the time I think up this crazy concept shot and scribble it in my notebook… …fate. Yea, I said it. The planets aligned and crap…whatever. 🙂 It was about the same time as my idea, as I got a random text message from Stacey saying she was (unexpectedly) pregnant.
I instantly thought of them and their baby as being absolutely PERFECT for this concept portrait idea…but, almost didn’t ask, because they were first time parents…and as any “experienced parents” know…you are ALWAYS more protective and overly caution with your first born. But…the creative energy building up inside MADE me ask them anyway. I think I started my text message out as “So I had a photo idea that is slightly dark humored…” ….to which Stacey wrote back…”you had me at ‘dark humor'” hahaha.
Without further ado….The BUN in the OVEN series.
This concept series was constructed over the course of a few weeks (third term pregnancy to birth)…and yes, that is their actual newborn, Zara, (I think 6 days old, if I remember right). No, there were no newborn babies harmed in the making of this image. 🙂 …But Zara did potty all over the fresh vegetables in the pot.
I thought it was fitting to show this off in time for Halloween. Enjoy!
Thank Stacey and Josh for sharing my humor….and willingly (and creepily, eagerly) put your first born baby into a giant pot for art. :)))) You guys ROCK! I’ll have to get to work on another grand idea for baby #2.
